The Quick Guide to Finding Your Career in Tech
It’s critical to do everything in your power to get ahead in life. If you don’t, a major life event can turn your life upside down. You’ll go from comfortable living to feeling like you are trying to pay off the National Debt.
Incredible opportunities are available in today’s world—especially the tech sector. Are you the type of person who can reach out and seize them?
Choosing Your Path
Tech gives you an amazing variety of opportunities to pursue. Some people are looking to build wealth with stock options, while others are trying to build a business that gives them the freedom to live life on their own terms. There is no wrong way to go, just different paths up the same mountain.
A great way to separate your options is to ask a simple question: “Do I want to work for someone else or do I want to work for myself?”
There’s a big difference between starting off as a Freelancer or, for example, pursuing one of the many high paying Apple Careers. The risk in each is really dependent upon your skills and abilities as well as your enjoyment in working in close proximity to others every day.
Once you’ve asked that easy question, go a little deeper. Think carefully about what an ideal career looks like. It’s different for everyone, and that’s okay. You are living your life for yourself and nobody else.
Prepare for Action
After you narrow down which type of career you want to pursue, it’s time to get yourself ready for the role.
Lots of people love the idea of being an influencer of some kind. This is a much romanticized profession, especially to younger individuals. But did you know there are 6 different influencer definitions? It’s very important to make sure you know which level you are targeting. You could start building income for yourself with as little as 1000 followers. Obviously a higher number of dedicated followers equals a greater potential for monetization.
You will want to dig into your selected career path and understand how other people have become successful. There is no need to reinvent the wheel. Look for the general direction other successful individuals have taken and ask yourself if you are interested in taking the same steps.
It’s also important to develop the skills that are necessary to thrive. If you set your sights on two or three different Facebook Careers, it is easy to create an inventory of the skills you need to obtain. For example, you might need to learn one or two programming languages, become proficient with Microsoft Office, and work on your public speaking skills.
Knowing what you need to become at least average at will give you a series of steps you can take to slowly (or quickly) march toward your goal. The good news is that you can do this in your spare time while still working your current job. And free resources to learn these skills are available everywhere from YouTube videos to online communities to your local library.
Dedicating just a half hour every day for a month will pay off faster than you might think.
Seize the Opportunity
Once you know your path and you’ve acquired your skills, it is time to put your plan into action. Start looking at the best ways to get into the position you want.
Something like an Influencer is as easy as picking an audience and launching social media, assuming you have the skills to provide content regularly. If you want to Freelance, you might need to begin reaching out to organizations or individuals who you believe have a need for your skills and the ability to pay you what you are worth. It will often take longer to make big money in these roles, but at least the barrier to entry is relatively low.
Going after a much more sought after position, such as one of the many Google Careers, is a different story. You will need to not only develop skills but extensively prepare for interviews and find a way to stick out in a sea of applicants. The end result is quite lucrative with the added benefit of the social prestige from working for one of the world’s most admired companies, but you will need to put in tremendous effort to achieve this result.
Let’s say things fall through and you can’t get into Google, no matter how hard you try. All is not lost! All those skills you developed can be applied to other, possibly more lucrative opportunities. Consider looking for an AngelList Job and get in on the ground floor of an up and coming tech company. Early employees at thousands of Silicon Valley tech firms made seven, eight, or even nine figures off of their restricted stock and stock options when their company went public. You could be one of those people who strikes it rich by helping a new firm become a household name.
While there are an infinite number of ways to increase your income with tech, it’s easy to get started. It’s this simple:
- Choose Your Path
- Prepare for Action
- Seize the Opportunity
Don’t mistake the simplicity of brevity. Each of these bullet points will have several actions you must take before you move on to the next one. Your goals will take time to achieve. Keep marching forward every day—even a tiny step counts. You can do it.
Before you know it, you will be time to exercise stock options and enjoy your newfound wealth.
